A Quick Q&A with Clayton County School Board Member, Dr. Deatrice “Dee” Haney

What inspires you? I am inspired by our children’s innocence, courage, and drive to reach their highest human potential.

Who inspires you?  My maternal grandmother Sallie Jones inspires me in that she was all about service-though she always made certain family was first, she also made sure the community that she served was also priority.  She was grounded on her faith and taught her children and grandchildren to do to unto others as we would want done to us…she was a firm believer in servitude.  She would cook, “deliver” food, clothing, and toys [without ever driving or obtaining a driver’s license 🙂 ] to families who were in need.

Why is community service important to you? Every since I was a small child, it was instilled in me to give back and engage with my community. In order for us to achieve a lasting positive impact on our community, we must envision it.

Why did you decide to run for the school board seat?   I decided to run for the school board seat because of my love for children and community. Over the years I have been advocating through various initiatives for the best interest of our children and I want to contribute to the development of young minds.  I will continue to provide leadership and work collaboratively with community partners to ensure our children have a world-class and competitive education.

As an elected official, what promise can you make to your constituents? I am committed to providing new solutions that will benefit our students through community involvement while establishing equity in our school district, improving accountability in our district, and working with local/state legislation for our district.

What would you consider as the best of the best about you? My inner strength is listening without judgment.

What was your greatest accomplishment and what did you learn by accomplishing it? My greatest accomplishment is serving in a leadership capacity and sharing in the development of our children.

What is your favorite quote? “Listen to the rhythm of your own calling, and follow that.” Oprah Winfrey
